Grommet Island

Just 4 short years ago, disabled children had only limited access to the beach. There was no place to easily play and enjoy the oceanfront. Navigating through the sand was a virtual impossibility. Playing with friends and brothers and sisters and having a real day at the beach was just a dream. When the thousands of JT Walk supporters, businesses and organizations saw the inequity, they were determined to provide a solution. Undaunted by the logistics and the financial hurdles, they set out to raise money to build the first oceanfront park and playground in America.

Today, JT’s Grommet Island Beach Park & Playground for EveryBODY stands on the Virginia Beach oceanfront as a testament to the power of people determined to make a difference in the lives of others. People knocked on doors, called friends and relatives, held parties and did whatever they could to raise money to build the park. Thousands of families have enjoyed the fruits of their labor.
